Head Coach

Adam Leaney

Head Coach Adam has more than 10 years’ experience training, competing, coaching and programming various modalities of functional fitness and strength training. He first came across CrossFit training in 2012 and found it ticked a lot of boxes that complemented his military background.

From the get-go, he was working with some big names in the industry (read: Cherie Chan, wife of CF athlete Matt) and continued working with her throughout his two deployments (Timor-Leste and Afghanistan). Upon his return, he got more involved in the sport as part of an Army Competition, and it wasn’t long before he took on some serious programming under the well-known Raw Strength & Conditioning banner.

As Adam developed as an athlete, he wanted to share his knowledge, expertise and passion, and it only made sense that he started coaching. He eventually joined fellow Raw athlete, James Newbury, co-owner and -founder of CrossFit Mode (now Soul!) and set his sights on some bigger competitions, jumping in alongside James as he prepared for The CrossFit Games (a rigorous and character-building training regime).

This put Adam in good stead for the 2017 Oceania Team Regionals where he represented Mode Nation. He then went on to compete in CrossFit sanctioned events, The Australian CrossFit Championships and Down Under CrossFit Championships in 2020 and managed to qualify for the first CrossFit Semi-Final Comp, Torian Pro, with some of Australia’s top athletes. While competing, he decided to deepen his knowledge of all things Exercise Science and undertook his Bachelor’s Degree, graduating in 2022.

Adam is sports-obsessed and loves to delve into the different training disciplines and modalities that different sports demand of their athletes (from runners and cyclists, to team athletes, body builders and more!). He’s has been at the helm of Soul’s coaching team since 2022, delivering research-based programming for our members with incredible results. His passion for seeing people smash their goals and achieve things they never thought possible is simply a cut above. He cares deeply about every member’s experience when they come to the gym and works tirelessly to get to know everyone and provide individualised support.

When he’s not at the gym, Adam loves spending time with his wife Lauren and brand-new daughter, Olivia. Should #dadlyfe allow him the time these days, his other passion is getting outdoors on his MTB.

Over the years I have developed a great passion for strength and fitness and analysing how the human body works; I wanted to learn all I could about the body’s capacity and ability when exercising. Whilst my goals were initially quite individual, in the process I now have a great desire to teach what I have learnt and I love helping people pursue (and push them towards) their goals, whether they be big or small.
